OpenAI Forms Independent Math Advisory Group as Its Model Solves 100+ Open Problems

OpenAI Forms an Independent Mathematics Advisory Group

On September 21, OpenAI announced the creation of an Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, hosted at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). The nine founding members include prominent mathematicians such as Timothy Gowers, Edward Witten, and Ravi Vakil.

Alongside the announcement, OpenAI revealed that the same internal model behind its disputed solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem has since resolved more than 100 additional long-standing open problems across most areas of mathematics — a pace that reportedly surprised even OpenAI's own mathematicians.

The move follows an open letter published earlier this month by 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians, who accused AI labs of undermining academic research by racing to solve famous problems as a competitive benchmark.

Importantly, the new group has no power to slow OpenAI's internal math research pace — its role is limited to advising on how results are communicated and reviewed academically. Still, it marks a first concrete step toward including the mathematical community in the process.

Why it matters: Beyond the academic drama, this is a tangible signal of how fast AI reasoning capabilities are advancing — capabilities that eventually filter down into everyday business tools for data analysis, planning, and problem-solving.

Xiaomi Launches the World's Top Open-Weight Model — At a Fraction of the Cost

In a surprising twist, Xiaomi — better known for smartphones and EVs — released MiMo-V2.6-Pro, now ranked as the top open-weight model in the world on Artificial Analysis' composite intelligence benchmark, ahead of proprietary models like Grok 4.6 and Gemini 3.8 Flash.

Beyond performance, the model is free to download under an MIT license and available via Xiaomi's API at dramatically lower prices than competitors — about $0.87 per million output tokens, versus roughly $25 for Claude Opus 5. A lighter Flash version delivers close performance at roughly a third of the cost.

What this means for small and mid-sized businesses: A steep price drop at competitive quality opens the door to significantly cheaper AI adoption for companies running large volumes of automated tasks — from customer service agents to document processing.

    • Meta: Its personal AI agent app "Muse" is outpacing the download and adoption rate ChatGPT saw in its first two weeks on mobile, boosted by tight integration with Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
    • Google: Opened preorders for the $899 "Googlebook" laptop — an Android-based device that weaves Gemini directly into the cursor and desktop interface, aimed largely at the education market's roughly 50 million existing Chromebooks.
